Reading spiritual magazines is very inspiring to me. While reading through the July/August Unity Magazine, I read a prayer that I have revised: Spirit Be With Me Prayer.
After reading this prayer/poem in Unity Magazine, I was intrigued and did some research.
The original prayer is a Catholic prayer from St. Patrick:
St. Patrick’s Breastplate is a popular prayer attributed to one of Ireland’s most beloved patron saints. According to tradition, St. Patrick wrote it in 433 A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity. (The term breastplate refers to a piece of armor worn in battle.)
The actual prayer is very long, so I shorted and revised it. Following is my version from the excerpt in Unity Magazine.
Spirit Be With Me Prayer
Spirit be with me.
Spirit be within me.
Spirit be before me.
Spirit be behind me.
Spirit beneath and Spirit above.
Spirit on my right hand.
Spirit on my left.
Spirit with me waking, walking, and sleeping.
Spirit in every heart thinking of me.
Spirit on every tongue speaking to me.
Spirit in every eye that sees me.
Spirit in every ear that hears me.
I arise today, through
Spirit’s strength to pilot me,
Spirit’s might to uphold me,
Spirit’s wisdom to guide me,
Spirit’s eye to look before me,
Spirit’s ear to hear me,
Spirit’s word to speak for me,
Spirit’s hand to guard me,
Spirit’s shield to protect me,
Although this is a Catholic prayer, with a few minor revisions, it becomes a beautiful New Thought Prayer.
Repeating this prayer puts me in a peaceful state of mind. It brings my attention to the unity in which we live with Spirit and, thus, with each other.
The prayer above is a small excerpt of the original St. Patrick Breastplate prayer, which is quite lengthy but beautiful. If you wish to read the whole prayer (without the revisions), it is available on Our Catholic Prayers website.
