I’ve always believed each of us is endowed with a special gift. And although being a great artist, singer, musician, or writer is definitely a special gift, it goes much further than just artistic gifts. (NOTE: You might want to refer back to my last article: We Are Creative Beings.)
Two years ago, I shared a story: What is YOUR Gift? In the story, I described the work I did with the teenagers in the Foster Care System. I often asked them what their gift was? Exploring that question, in some cases, made a remarkable impact on these confused, angry and bewildered teens.
But knowing about our gift or gifts is not just for teenagers, it applies to all of us.
Even if you are not consciously aware of your search for your gift, you are always looking for a purpose in life. Finding the best mate, the best job/profession, even the best health is all pilgrimages to finding a purpose-filled life.
Follow Your Star
Matthew Kelly, in his book, The Rhythm of Life, addresses this concept in his chapter: Follow Your Star
One of his first tips is to remember that “great men and women always believed that they were destined to be great.”
Do you tell yourself that you are destined to be great? Maybe if you can define this as destined to become the best version of yourself, it will open up your thinking.
He goes on to explain that everyone is good at something — everyone has a uniquely special gift to share with the world.
We all have talents and abilities that are unique and different. These gifts are the key to great happiness in our lives and on occasion are leading indicators in the search to discover our vocation or miss in life.
Seek out and discover your gifts and talents. And don’t tell me you are not good at anything and you don’t have a special gift. I will not believe you anymore than I believed the teenagers who told me that!
So what is your special gift and how are you expressing it? Once you truly find and use your gift, you are on the road to happiness and fulfillment.
