I start my morning by reading emails from many New Thought leaders and churches. The uplifting messages help start my day on a positive tone which affects everything I do for the rest of the day.
This week I received an email from a retired Center for Spiritual Living minister in northern California. Her newsletter talked about kindness, but challenged her readers to practice ‘Kind Attentiveness’.
Here is a quote from her letter:
“What about kind attentiveness? Do you actually attend, pay attention to, the person needing help? Your kind attentiveness is the greatest gift you can give your fellow human beings. Translated, that means being fully present with someone who speaks to you in any way. Even just sitting beside someone and being totally mindful of their being in silence is a great way to practice kind attentiveness. Whenever I remember this, now, I feel good by being attentive. It is my mission in awakening myself and humanity.”
Kind attentiveness was a foreign concept to me at first, but after reading her quote above, it made perfect sense. What a wonderful way to acknowledge and honor one another: Showing kindness by listening attentively to a person.
I have talked before about not paying attention to others when they make small acts of kindness. Rather than letting this go as we go along our merry way, how about if we stop, acknowledge the beauty of another, and pay attention to them.
If you are a parent, you probably understand this concept. Children want your attention often. They don’t understand that you are busy with this or that, they just want to be acknowledged and heard.
I know no better to honor someone than to show ‘kind attentiveness’ as often as I can. Will you join me in remembering to be awake to kindness?
