The Truth and the Lie

The following story was originally shared in the 19th century — but is still valid today!

THE NAKED TRUTH

The Truth and the Lie meet on the road one day.  The Lie says to the Truth:  “it’s a marvelous day today”!  The Truth looks up to the skies and sighs, for the day was beautiful

They walk together for a while until the reached a beautiful well.

Original Painting by Jean-Leon Gerome, 1896:  ‘The Truth coming out of the well’

The Lie tells the Truth:  “The water in the well is nice.  Let’s take a swim together!”  The Truth, once again suspicious, tests the water and, indeed, it is very nice.

They undress and start to bathe.  Suddenly, the lie jumps out of the water and puts on the clothes of Truth and runs towards the village.

The Lie paraded himself through the streets of the city dressed as Truth; we’ve all seen a lie dressed up as truth. Many of the people were impressed with the Lie. The Lie was so splendid and beautiful. He looked and sounded wonderful. A lie dressed up as truth.

When Truth stepped out of the water and found her clothes had been stolen, Truth had to make a choice. She saw the garments the Lie had left behind. Truth said, “I’d rather walk around naked than to walk around as a Lie. I’ll just have to be what I am; the naked Truth”.
