In a world where division, anger and hate seem so prevalent, cultivating love can make a positive impact on those around you.
Personally, I am horrified by the lack of empathy in our society. When we push aside our humanitarianism — the parts of us that care for one another — the further we move from our purpose in the world.
During one of those grievous times, when the world seemed hopeless, I found a beautiful article in the November 2018 Science of Mind Magazine.
Here are the points listed in the article (My comments are in italics):
Practices to Cultivate a Culture of Love
Practice seeing those we fear as people also on a spiritual journey to self-awareness
We are all on our own personal journey — including people we may dislike or fear. Sometimes we just need time to ‘walk in their shoes’ before judging them.
Seek to be “for” things and ideas rather than “against” people.
The war on (fill in the blank) never solves the problem. Let’s stand for love, peace, joy and abundance for all!
Monitor your diet of fear-based news and media.
We tend to internalize what we see and read, so understand the importance of monitoring negative media input. Be informed, but not inundated!
Limit the amount of “ain’t it awful” conversations, you engage in.
It is so easy to get wrapped up in negative conversations that tend to snowball into mutual gripe sessions. Let’s learn to monitor our conversations!
Actively engage in spiritual mind treatment (affirmative prayer).
Affirmative prayer is a great practice to redirect our mind from focusing on the negative circumstances to focusing on Spirit.
Loving-kindness Meditation from Metta Sutta
May I (you/they) be well. May I (you/they) be happy.
May I (you/they) be healthy.
May I (you/they) be at peace.
May I (you/they) be free from pain and suffering.
Instead of responding and reacting out of a need to be right — no matter who it hurts — how about we cultivate a culture of love and compassion.
