I am sure you’ve heard the word: Karma! We often refer to it as the retribution to some action (usually negative action). In other words, negative actions against someone or something (or in some circles, evil actions) will be rewarded with negative action. In biblical terms, this would be the ‘eye for an eye’ concept.
Karma is a Sanskrit word that just means ‘action.’ There is no negative or positive reference at all!
Over the years, I think society has distorted the real meaning. Although Karma does signify a response to an action, it is not necessarily a ‘God will get you for this’ response.
I like how Susan Shumsky, D.D. in her book, Miracle Prayer, describes Karma:
So how does the law of karma work? Whatever you think, say or do produces far-reaching consequences. If you drop a rock into the center of a pond, ripples on the surface radiate outward from that pebble in concentric circles. When these circles reach the pond’s outer shore, they then travel inward, converging toward the center.
In other words, every thought you have, every word you speak and every deed you act upon affects the entire universe and also affects you in ways that you may not know!
Then, rather than accepting that karma as the belief in good and bad action, rewards and punishment, sin and damnation, Shumsky suggest that we change our view into thinking beyond these restraints!
Karma, instead, is more like the Law of Attraction: The concept is based on the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from pure energy, and that through the process of like energy attracting like energy a person can improve their health, wealth, and personal relationships. In other words, “You become what you think about!”.
Ultimately, karma means that whatever you believe will happen is exactly what will happen. And it can impact you and everything around you in ways that we may never fully know!
