Along with my previous two articles on the Power of Kindness and the Power of Intention, I would like to add another on the Power of Empathy.
“In simple terms, empathy is the ability to understand and share someone else’s feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in their situation.” (A1 definition).
Empathy is the basic building block of a strong community. Our empathy for one another is the glue that holds us together and fosters a sense of care and connection. To me, it is what makes us human.
Imagine my dismay to hear the following quote:
While Musk said he believes in empathy and that “you should care about other people,” he also thinks it’s destroying society.
“The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit,” Musk said. “There it’s they’re exploiting a bug in Western civilization, which is the empathy response.”
Empathy, he said, has been “weaponized.”

How can the very thing that unites us and makes us strong be the fundamental weakness of Western civilization?
Empathy is the heart of Oneness!
I find it very sad when I hear some folks demonstrate their lack of empathy. We all live in a type of cocoon. Our lives are small when tested against the world. In other words, too often, if it doesn’t affect us personally, it doesn’t matter. Or at least that is what some believe.
When one no longer cares about the less fortunate in society or the world, we become fractured, separatist individuals. But when we notice and look out for our fellow man, we become stronger and united as one.
Most of us observe this in our everyday lives. More commonly nowadays, the ‘haves’ do not care about the ‘have-nots.’
I find this attitude despicable!
What did Jesus teach? “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Isn’t that the same as having empathy for one another? Does that mean we look out for each other?
I have found times in my life when my frustration over the lack of empathy makes me want to walk away and pretend not to care. I suspect I’m not alone. But what if we focused more on what we can do for each other to make it a bit easier? Often, we are all in the same situation and circumstances. How much stronger we could be if we help one another through the times when doing things alone doesn’t work.
To me, the power of empathy makes us stronger and unites us. When that is the case, there is not much we cannot accomplish together.
