I was all ready to write and publish an article this week on the Lenten practice of letting go (that article will need to wait!). Then I read the news about the terrorist attacks on Muslims in New Zealand.
The aftermath of a tragedy towards a religious or ethnic group is particularly disturbing. Although this happened miles away in another country, it still affected me and ultimately all of us!
It reminded me of an article, What I know for Sure, that Oprah wrote in her magazine, January 2019. Following is an excerpt from her article:
“… We are losing what it means to be civilized. We’re losing respect for
lives other than own. …
We must find a way to come together. Both sides — all sides — must stop attacking and maligning. Our goal must be decency and respect for every human we encounter.
This is the moment when we either turn up the light within ourselves or move further into the darkness. …
Daily, we’re saturated in negativity. But it takes only one candle to light a whole room of darkness. People think, Oh, I have no power to change the world. But we are the world, through our families, our work, our communities. And how you treat every person in your world has an impact on the macrocosm. Don’t underestimate your power. Hate is potent, but so is kindness. And goodness, and grace. …
With hatred, no side wins. In the end, we all lose….”
If nothing else, let’s follow Oprah’s advice and give up hate, division, anger, lies and spreading of lies. Not just when tragedy strikes, but every day! Our world will be better for it!
