Lent started on Wednesday, March 6. If you are not familiar with Lent, this is how Wiki describes it:
“Lent is a solemn religious observance in the Christian liturgical calendar that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later, before Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer for Easter through prayer, doing penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial… In Lent, many Christians commit to fasting, as well as giving up certain luxuries in order to replicate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ’s journey into the desert for 40 days.”
I was raised Catholic and Lent observances were important in our family. For one, there was no meat on Fridays and no desserts for the entire 40-days until Easter Sunday. I remember the whole family gathering together, on our knees in the living room, once a week to recite the Rosary together. As a teenager, I remember joking with my friends, telling them that I was giving up talking to my father for Lent!
Although Lent is considered to be a Christian religious observance, New Thought developed it as a season to release negative thoughts and feelings: Fasting negative thoughts and feasting on the Christ within. (Much better practice than the ones from my childhood!)
Rev. Jackie Holland from Centers for Spiritual Living in Boise, Idaho refers to Lent as “Let’s Eliminate Negative Thinking”! She suggests…
“…pick one area of your life in which you will start practicing self-mastery for the next 40 days. I promise you…as you invest your whole attitude, passion and good energy into fasting from that which no longer supports your Life Journey and feasting on that which does support you. . .your life WILL change from good to great, from great to greater!”
Unity developed a beautiful booklet on the subject. Each day a ‘fasting’ or ‘feasting’ affirmation and story is shared to read and ponder during the 40 Days of Lent.
