Trust by Living in the Present

Many people struggle with trusting in Spirit. But I suggest we learn to trust by living in the present moment.

I grew up with a mother that I describe as a worry-wart! I guess growing up during the Depression of the 1930s and then losing your father as a young teenager formed the worry pattern in her mind. And, of course, she taught that habit to me.

Spending most of my life working to trust in Spirit, I have found that living fully in the present helps me to trust.

When I focus on the messy events of the world, or even if I only see the disjointed events in my life, I can easily fall into worry and fret. But what can I do to change things? I can only change myself by learning to trust by living in the present moment. I cannot do a thing to change the past, nor can I change the future by fretting about it. All I can impact is the present moment I am living. Do I want to straddle my future by worrying and fretting?

There is a verse in the  Bible, Matthew 6:26, that reminds me to trust by living in the present:

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  ~ New International Verson

Animals are fun to observe. They live their lives doing what they love and living in the present. They don’t have regrets from yesterday or are anxious about the future. Our pets’ lives are basically simple and comfortable. And yet, humans typically worry or ruminate and don’t always feel they can trust in something beyond themselves to take care of them. We, as humans, are supposed to be so much more advanced than other living things on earth.

Recently, I took on a new work task that was different from what I typically do in my business. The discussion around these new tasks seemed to confuse me more. I finally took the time to look through the information, instructions, and past tasks. I realized I was limiting myself. I knew how to do all these things—maybe differently, but I knew what I was doing.

I chose to trust myself and my abilities, knowing that I could move forward with ease and confidence. No more worrying and fretting, which was just making the situation worse. Not only was I trusting myself and my abilities, but I was also trusting that Spirit would guide my way. Now, I am moving forward with ease and grace in these tasks.

What situation(s) in your life are moving you towards trusting by living in the present moment?
