Creating a Sacred Spiritual Space

Spiritual practices keep us focused on who we really are, rather than what we may see around us.  But before we choose a spiritual practice, it will help to create a sacred spiritual space. According to Katherine Robertson-Pilling’ article on the Gaiam website:

Creating your own sacred space lets you express your very human need for ongoing spiritual nourishment. Whether it’s at home, at work or in some “third space” such as a hotel room when traveling, everyone can benefit from creating places where they intentionally choose what surrounds them.

Your sacred space might contain a single object such as a statue, sculpture or private altar you deliberately place in a special location, or it may be an entire room or garden or even your entire home arranged with furnishings, objects, and décor that have special meaning for you.

A Sacred Spiritual Space is a special place purposely designated for spiritual practices. It does not need to be fancy or even inside a structure. You can create a sacred spiritual space in your yard or just out in nature. Your space just needs to be intentionally created so you can express your spirituality.

Designating a special place for your spiritual practices helps you center your thoughts and prepare mentally and emotionally. Just like sitting at the dinner table (and maybe adding a blessing) prepares your mind for the eating process, your sacred spiritual space will do the same for your spiritual process.

Tips to Help Create Your Sacred Spiritual Space

  1. Decide what “sacred” means to you. To me, it means spiritual, peaceful, contemplative, and uplifting.
  2. Dedicate a spot in your home that can become sacred. You don’t need an entire room—maybe just a corner or section of a room. For me, it is a chair in the corner of my living room next to a lamp table where I keep my spiritual books, journals, and meditation materials.
  3. Create your own “altar” or sacred object. You can use personal items that are meaningful to you. Many people use candles, pictures, meaningful quotes, statues, or other relics. At one point, I had a bowl full of beautiful rocks on my altar.
  4. Create a ritual. Once you’ve created your sacred space, how will you honor it? You can start with prayer and/or meditation every morning. I spend time reading from my Science of Mind and/or Unity magazine and finish with a short prayer, journaling, and meditation.

There is no right or wrong way to create your sacred spiritual space. Design your space in a way that works for you. Often, my cat joins me during this time.  I like to think she feels the sacredness of the time and space as much as I do!
