Remember “WWJD”?

If you remember the 70s and 80s when the evangelical movement was quite strong (and I was among those following it) and all kinds of ‘Christian’ bumper stickers were popular.

But, do you remember WWJD?  It stood for the words: ‘What Would Jesus Do?’

At the time, I was not impressed with the saying.  Even as a fundamental Christian (at the time), I thought it was kind of stupid as I figured you believed the Bible or you didn’t.

Well, obviously, I changed my thinking from that time as, now, I find the saying very appropriate today.

Currently, it is difficult to escape the news of corruption, lies, abuse, and power everywhere we look.  The division between friends, community and country seems to be overwhelming.  So how do we deal with these circumstances?

I go back to the four words:  What Would Jesus Do?

When I meditate on that concept, I remember the words of the famous Sermon on the Mount:

Remember WWJD?The Beatitudes

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

NOTE:  Taken from the New International Version.  Bolding added for emphasis.

Personally, I find it difficult to see the ugliness and meanness that seems to be displaying as people interject their opinions on what is going on in our country.  It is then, that I need to go back and see what Jesus said about the poor in spirit, the mourers, the meek, those who hunger for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers and those who are persecuted because they chose to be righteous!

I stop and tell myself if Jesus can do this as expressed in his words and actions, so can I!

Will you join me today in applying WWJD to your response and reaction to what is going on in our country at this moment?
