I keep my life balanced with self-care through spiritual practices. With the turmoil in the world, the best way I found to stay centered is through my spiritual practices.
Before discussing these spiritual practices, I would like to share some interesting information I found in the January/February issue of Unity Magazine – Spirituality & Health. It is titled “Create Your Own At-Home Retreat: A Journey to Self-care and Inner Peace.”
Here are the suggestions to start your self-care routine:
- Start your At-Home Retreat with a nature walk: Stepping outside to connect with nature can clear your mind.
- Create a sacred meditation space: Having a quiet corner in your home for meditation helps you calm yourself whenever you sit there.
- Cooking and sharing a nourishing meal: Be mindful of every step of your dish and lovingly share with another or just yourself.
- Sip your tea or hot beverage mindfully: Enjoy those ritual moments while you drink your hot beverage.
- Slow down and unplug from the world: Time away from your devices and screens and simply be.
- Practice gentle movement: Engage in simple exercises, such as stretching, to quiet your mind.
- Start and end your day with gratitude: Write down at least three things you are grateful for to shift your mind from lack.
Spiritual practices can be as simple as the ones above or more directed disciplines that help you deepen your self-care. Like any helpful discipline, these practices must be used daily or at least frequently to create effective change.
Here are some deeper practices to have in your spiritual toolbox to guide you to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
- Affirmations and Afformations state (statements focusing on a positive outcome)
- Meditation (mindful stillness to listen to Spirit)
- Visualization (using your imagination to help manifest your goals)
- Visioning (aid to train ourselves to be able to hear, feel, see and catch God’s plan for our life or project)
- Giving Time, Talents, and Treasure (joyfully dedicating your resources to participate in the flow of Substance in the Universe)
- Spiritual Study (opening to new ideas and the greater Good into your life)
- Journaling Your Thoughts and Feelings (aids in clarity and better understanding of our thoughts and feelings)
- Spiritual Treatment (recognize your answer to prayer as affirmed in the prayer itself and speaking the nature of Spirit into form)

I have created a written guide outlining all eight tools (and more) to help you lean on something beyond yourself for strength and clarity.
I discovered that we are not humans having a spiritual experience but rather spiritual beings having a human experience! Therefore, spiritual practices (the “meat” or protein behind spirituality) helped me get in touch with my inner being, where the true hunger for spirit resides. Establishing a regular diet of spiritual practices improves my life inwardly and outwardly.
