A few weeks back, I wrote an article on Dealing with Death and Dying. Honestly, I didn’t think I would need to deal with this again so soon. One of my friends passed away on Tuesday, August 18th.
Even though we all knew it was coming, it was still a shock that it came so soon. I am still dealing with my feelings about this and probably will for a while. Not only was this man my friend, but he was also the Senior Minister of one of the churches I work for. Rev. Neil Pinkman was my supervisor.
In addition to managing the workflow for people who are grieving, I work as a virtual assistant for his wife, Michelle. Between trying to help coordinate the tasks of these two business entities, I really haven’t had time to grieve.
We are all mortal
All of this tends to make me think about my own mortality. Being the age where some of my peers are in poor health, dying themselves, or dealing with the death of a spouse. I don’t want to get sick or die thinking I have not finished what I was placed on earth to do.
I have talked before about our purpose in life. Quite simply, I believe it is to manifest Spirit in the world; to show love and compassion for those around us. The older I get (I’m in my seventies), the more I want to be a beacon for love in the world. I saw this trait in my friend Neil. One of his last tasks for me before he died was to add a special conversation time, led by his wife, for his congregation. This wasn’t about him; it was about the people around him that he loved.
I will remember Rev. Neil.
I will remember Rev. Neil for his upbeat attitude, even though I knew he was suffering, and for his sense of humor. He was always patient with me when I ‘didn’t get it.’ He was always kind to those around him. He desired to make sure people were happy and having a good time. His wisdom and spiritual example to me, in particular. He was a wonderful teacher. He was a great man who influenced my life and will be sorely missed.
My last thoughts: Rest in peace, my friend, Neil! Strength and love to his wife, Michelle, and their family.
